On Thursday, July 24, 2025, the College of Law discussed a master's thesis in Private Law titled:
"The Effect of Retraction in Personal Status Matters – A Comparative Study"
Presented by master's student Ahmed Najm Abdullah.
In personal status matters, agreements may be established with mutual consent—such as special conditions in marriage contracts, a husband's acknowledgment of marriage/breastfeeding/lineage, authorizing a wife to divorce herself (tawkeel), taking an oath of condemnation (li'an), or bequeathing to a spouse. Subsequently, one spouse or their relatives may unilaterally retract such agreements without the other party's consent or coercion. The retracting party bears full legal consequences of this retraction, whether financial or non-financial, regardless of its impact on the original matter.
