A lecture on “The impact of addiction on the marital relationship.”
On Sunday, November 12, 2024, the Rehabilitation, Employment, and Follow-up Unit at the College of Law held a lecture entitled ((The Impact of Addiction and Intoxicants on the Marital Relationship)) in which the lecturer (Eng. Thaer Hamid Awad) lectured. He stated that this phenomenon has a negative impact on the marital relationship in all social, psychological, and religious aspects, and its impact is not limited to the addict or trafficker, but rather to all members of the family, as addiction affects children by keeping them busy from work and searching for inappropriate ways. It is legitimate to collect money and leave school sometimes, and it also has an impact on the wife in terms of deprivation and emotional apathy. Also, if the addict does not collect the money, he will resort to theft, embezzlement, bribery, or other crimes. Therefore, the lawgiver dealt with it professionally, imposing separation for both parties of the relationship as a final solution in the relationship that there is no hope of reforming, as in Article (40/1) of the Iraqi Personal Status Law No. 188 of 1959. The rate, and on the other hand, in order to preserve marital life if there is a desire on one of the two parties to preserve it, as the legislator has permitted, for example, under Article (41/3.2.1) of the above law, to give an opportunity to the two arbitrators or more to try to reconcile and lift the state of disagreement that occurred due to addiction, to other means, admonition and advice from the correct party who is abusing, and so on.
